You want to "Force Quit" the program that is hung up. To do this, press [Option + Apple/Command + Esc] (all at the same time) and a "Force Quit" window will pop up. Choose the program you wish to quit, and press "Force Quit".

If your mouse has not frozen up, you can access the Force Quit menu by going to the blue apple (upper left of your screen) and choosing "Force Quit".

If you can't get the Force Quit window to come up, you'll have to manually restart your machine. Press and hold the power button on your computer for about 5 seconds, this should force a restart.

The default user's home directory is stored at something like

Template/English.lproj/Library/Preferences') before you create your
user accounts.

If files on the Mac contain special characters, you will not be able to copy them to a Windows machine (or server share).

The quickest and easiest way to rename these files is by using "A Better Finder Rename" program, available here:

1. Insert your Mac OS X CD.

2. Boot to your Mac OS X CD.

3. Do not install Mac OS X; instead, from theUtility Menu, select "Terminal."

4. Type the following command:

diskutil list

You will need to note the disk identifier forthe boot partition for your system disk. The boot partition is named "Boot OS X" and is thepartition immediately following your system disk. For example, if your systemdisk is disk0s2, youshould find a boot partition with the name "Boot OS X" with the identifier disk0s3.

Where <bootpartition> is the disk identifier you learned from issuing the previouscommand. This will mount the boot partition for your system disk.

Example: Diskutil mountdisk0s3

cd "/Volumes/Boot OS X/System/Library/CoreServices"

If this directory does not exist, you may needto recover your disk.

The Exchange calendar will initially load correctly in iCal, but over time it starts to display an error with recurring events. The error is: "iCal can't save the event "EVENT TITLE" to the exchange server. The account can't be modified. To discard your changes and continue using the version of your calendar that is on the server, click Revert to Server. To save your changes on your computer until the problem is resolved. click Go Offline."

If you select "Revert to Server", it keeps going through all recurring events attached to the calendar. If you select "Go Offline", the errors stop but as soon as you go back online the errors return.

This is related to time zone settings. You must complete both steps.

  • Open iCal -> Preferences -> Advanced tab. Check 'Turn on Time Zone Support'.
  • Open System Preferences -> Date & Time -> Time Zone tab. Check 'Set time zone automatically using current location'. You may see a message about turning Airport on; if you see it make sure wifi is turned on (even if you aren't connected to a network).
