How to Map a Network Drive in OS X

Often times you will have data stored on a server instead of your local office computer. The following steps will help explain how to create a drive on your local office computer that connects to the location on the UAB server. Before we begin, please be aware that these instructions are specific to OS X on a Mac and should work for 10.7 (Lion) - 10.12 (Sierra).
Warning: macOS 10.12.5 (Sierra) suffers from an smb bug that prevents it from successfully connecting to a network server location. To get around this, you can specify the domain and username in the location connection string as shown in Step 2 below.
*As of July 12, 2017, the Dept. of Medicine IT group will no longer support older versions of OS X prior to 10.9 (Mavericks) for file server access.
Off-campus Access Requires VPN
Please note that you will need to be running and connected to UAB's secure VPN connection in order for off-campus access to work.
Step 1: Open the Finder, then select Go from the menu. Now select Connect to Server from the drop-down menu.
Step 2: In the Connect to Server pop-up box, enter the details of the network share location (smb://uab;BlazerID@servername.ad.uab.edu/sharename) as seen below.
Step 3: Enter your BlazerID, password, and click Connect.
Step 4: That's it! The drive will now be accessible through the Finder and your apps.
